Who is Syl Ardens?
Syl Ardens is probably a space bird living on a space island somewhere... in space.
She mostly writes fantasy and sci-fi hybrid settings ("speculative fiction") for original work, including her original setting, the Akatasphere. Typical plot themes include emotions as power, finding comfort with oneself and others, and coming out on the other side of struggles.
When not writing, she has her nose in several different video games (Honkai: Star Rail being most likely), chews on video game soundtracks from many genres (and the occasional Fall Out Boy song that snuck into the playlist), and streams as a VTuber (schedule permitting).
She also enjoys making strange noises, the majority of which are derived from woodcock peents, the distinct noises of Mr. Hideaki Utsumi's birds, and sounds from the Animals and Synthesizers YouTube channel.
What can be found here?
This archive is primarily for hosting the short stories of the Akatasphere universe, which can be divided into two main "sub-settings":
- The Inner Sphere, a region of space governed by birdlike beings known as Starsingers. This region is where emotion-based magic is strongest and most frequently used, and its planetary worlds have poured much effort into researching the concept. Currently, Inner Sphere stories are on a temporary hiatus.
- The Sea of Ink is the region of space on the outer rim of the Akatasphere, away from the Inner Sphere worlds. The nature of magic has shifted here, so technology developed differently to compensate. For example, space travel is much more advanced due to the means to teleport directly between worlds being less available. The region gets its name from an ink-like "medium" that can be a catalyst for great feats of manipulation and creation.
